Importance of A Sound Boiler Maintenance Program

Boilers are vital pieces of equipment used in the day to day operations of many Industrial Facilities. Boilers can pose a unique set of Safety Concerns if they are not Properly Operated and Maintained. Some of these safety concerns could be as small as the possibility of minor burns due to steam or water leaks, or as large as severe injury, death and property damage caused by catastrophic failure of piping or components, boiler explosion or a furnace explosion.

While Proper Operation of Boilers is absolutely vital to Safety, GCAP also firmly believes that a Sound Boiler Maintenance Program is also absolutely essential to the safe operation of Boilers as well. The reasoning behind this ideology is simple. An operator may be operating a Boiler following the safest procedures available but if the critical safeties, components and all associated equipment are not properly maintained then that equipment then becomes an unsafe part of the boiler and its operation.

Boilers typically have numerous critical safeties installed on them to prevent dangerous situations as well as other critical equipment to support safe boiler operation. As with all equipment a good Preventative Maintenance and Mechanical Integrity Program is absolutely vital to prevent dangerous situations or dangerous operational status. By implementing a Preventative Maintenance Program and by following through with the procedures in the program Boilers can be safely operated throughout their lifetime.

While there are numerous items that should be included in a Sound Boiler Maintenance Program, GCAP believes that Inspection and Maintenance of ALL Safety Devices should be a required part of any facilities boiler maintenance program. A good maintenance program should include a specific testing schedule of all critical safeties as well as an accepted procedure for performing these tests.

While Boilers CAN pose a significant threat to human safety and property, GCAP believes that a Sound Boiler Maintenance Program paired with Boiler Operator training is the key to Safe and Efficient Boiler Operation.  For more information on developing a Sound Boiler Maintenance Program or Boiler Operator training please contact Garden City Ammonia Program.
